Wow, it felt scary to type 2019 in the title for this post. In my mind it’s forever the year 2000 and I am 17 years old. Alas.
I’ve been fortunate to be off work for most of December as I am moving from one job to another so I’ve been able to do a lot of reading. I’m due to start teaching in a new school at the beginning of the new term this coming Monday. It’s a promoted post with a lot of new responsibilities but hopefully i’ll still get enough time to read (is there ever enough time?). I have been reading a lot of NetGalley ARCs recently so have a bunch of scheduled posts in the pipeline which has made me a bit tardy when it comes to updating with my progress.
Currently i’m reading “Deathless” by Catherynne M. Valente. Where has this book been all my life? Seriously. I am a sucker for riffs on Slavic folklore and I absolutely love this book already. Why have I not heard about it before now? How could I have been so blind?

“All That Remains: A Life in Death” by Sue Black
I have to confess to being a bit of a fangirl for Sue Black. We hail from the same area and she’s a fascinating woman. This book recently won the Saltire Book of the Year award and my colleagues purchased it for me as a leaving gift. It doesn’t make for easy reading at times but the subject matter is interesting and Black’s musings and passion for the work she does makes this a fantastic read. Plus, look at that cover!
Books i’m excited for in 2019
There are some extremely exciting books on the horizon for me this year. First and foremost it has to be “King of Scars” by Leigh Bardugo. A few months ago in a drunken moment I pre-ordered the Illumicrate Grisha Box 2 and boy am I ever glad I did. Look at itttttt. You can order your own box here. Can’t wait to find out what my beloved Nikolai has been up to.
I’m also looking forward to “The Wicked King” by Holly Black. Honestly I wasn’t super in love with “The Cruel Prince” when I first read it but it has grown on me since. I was lucky enough to win a copy of The Wicked King via a Twitter giveaway so i’m excited to read it when it arrives.
I’m also really hyped about “The Winter of the Witch” by Katherine Arden. I’ve been trying not to seethe with jealousy while seeing everyone posting their ARC reviews but i’m glad to see such positive early reactions because I adored the previous two novels.
Books I haven’t read but really need to this year…
I almost feel embarrassed admitting this but I haven’t read “Strange the Dreamer” by Laini Taylor despite all the recommendations I’ve had. Ditto “Vicious” by V.E. Schwab. Hopefully I’ll get time soon.
